Everybody's gone surfin', Surfin' Hangzhou

So today was the day of a tidal bore in Hangzhou and yours truly got to be there!!! I walked about 15 minutes to right above the bend in the river. There were quite a few people there, waiting for the tidal bore.

Waiting by the river bank

Hangzhou, as you know, is located on the Qiantang River.  The Silver Dragon aka the tidal bore happens every day, but it is most powerful and noticeable during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which was last Thursday. The tidal bore is a huge wave that comes up the river. It's caused when the incoming tide is pushed into a narrow opening. The Hangzhou Bay looks like a bell and this causes the tide to narrow and be pushed up quickly into a wave. Quite a few places have the tidal bore, most famously the Amazon River, which is huge. Hangzhou tidal bore is second in strength and height to the Amazon River, which is pretty amazing!!

Emergency teams were on stand by. I liked the life preserver at the back of the fire truck.

The Dragon is coming!!
It was pretty crowded where I stood and it only got more crowded. I stood near a little village on the edge of the water. There was a sea wall below me and a sea wall to the right of me, protecting the village.

If you look under the bridge, you can see the wave coming.

Look to the far right.

Silver Dragon!!

And here's where it got impressive!!

Yah, that Silver Dragon came up and got all of us soaking wet!!! It bounced off the sea wall on the left and then back off the one below. It was great! My whole front was soaked while my back was dry. I got a lot of funny looks as I walked to the grocery store. It then proceeded to rain the whole way back so I was even more wet.

Yeah, my hair looks amazing and I'm soaked.
All in all, a great tidal bore experience and I will definitely be standing in that spot next year so I can get wet again!!
